GeoNet Quake: Stay Alert with this Earthquake Notification App
GeoNet Quake is a free app that sends custom notifications for earthquakes in New Zealand, as well as bulletins on volcanic activity. With this app, users can receive notifications within a few minutes of quakes that interest them. They can also set up multiple earthquake notifications based on location, intensity, magnitude, and depth. The app has configurable notification rules, sounds, and quiet time periods. Users can view recent quakes in a list or map and filter them by intensity.
The app offers additional features for technical users, such as viewing peak ground accelerations (PGA) and velocities (PGV) recorded by their seismograph network on a map. Users can also submit shaking reports from their phone and view felt reports from around the country alongside shaking levels recorded by their seismograph network. Additionally, users can share quakes via SMS, email, Twitter, Facebook, and other platforms. The app also notifies users about changing volcanic activity with Volcanic Alert Bulletins and the latest GeoNet news articles. However, it should be noted that continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
